Description:

 

The Regional Nutrition Technical Advisor for Eastern and Southern Africa works closely with project headquarters to define the strategy for providing optimal nutrition technical assistance in the region. The Advisor provides technical leadership and support to country-based staff based in the region and facilitates the sharing of knowledge, models and approaches among countries for more effective implementation and scale-up of nutrition activities. The Advisor supports country-level project work plan development and monitoring of progress to ensure timely and high quality outputs.

 

Availability of this position is contingent upon release of a solicitation by USAID and recruitment is contingent upon successful award of the project to FHI 360 and final USAID approval of the candidate. This position will be based in East or Southern Africa.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:

 

Support project country staff in providing nutrition technical assistance to USAID Missions and their partners, including host country governments, NGOs, and other institutions. Such technical assistance may include development of national policies, guidelines, strategies and action plans, advocacy materials, and job aids; training and other capacity strengthening activities; support for activity design, implementation, and M&E; and other related tasks.

Share research findings, emerging lessons and knowledge about the use of effective models and approaches across countries to maximize cross-border learning and to ensure better programming and rapid scale-up of effective programs. Capture, analyze and synthesize country experiences and success stories for wider dissemination through the project Knowledge Management platform. Develop technical briefs and impact stories to share effective approaches from country platforms more widely.

Help project country staff identify and work effectively with local organizations and partners to maximize the use and strengthening of local capacity for sustainable results.

Help project country staff, as needed, to liaise with USAID/Washington and Mission contact points to effectively translate technical assistance needs into action. Support the development of concept notes, terms of reference and annual work plans for Missions in the region to ensure that activities reflect the latest evidence and knowledge.

Periodically prepare and deliver written and oral reports on the progress and results of project activities in the region. Attend and present on project activities at national and regional conferences, as needed.

Perform other duties as directed.

Qualifications:

 

Education:

Masters in one of the following or related fields: Nutrition, public health, or other job-related field required or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Experience:

At least 10 years of work experience and at least 5 years of experience in international nutrition, HIV and AIDS, or other health-related work.

Work experience in eastern or southern Africa preferred.

Experience with USAID-funded activities preferred.

Skills:

Excellent written and oral English communication skills and ability to write for a range of audiences and purposes. Superior presentation skills.

Demonstrated ability to initiate and manage significant technical activities, including designing activities, mobilizing resources, identifying and managing partners, and reporting

Ability to undertake problem analyses and organize diverse information in a systematic way while thinking creatively to propose approaches to improve program design, implementation, and results reporting.

Ability to effectively work independently and if needed outside of conventional office environments.

Ability to work effectively in a team consisting of people with different technical backgrounds and with varying levels of technical training.

Demonstrated managerial and interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate relationships and interact smoothly and effectively with clients and colleagues.

Ability to translate technical information into practical guidance and tools and effectively communicate these using print, electronic, and presentation media.

Working Conditions including Travel and Overtime:

Position is based in Eastern or Southern Africa.

Must be available for international travel up to 50% time.
